Seven thousand years ago, there were some trays of mankind existing on this territory. The oldest tribes were the Amants and later the Celts. There are many sights which prove human existence such as Gomolava near Hrtkovci, Gradina upon river Bosut, the old Slankamen, the old town of Kupinik and others.

As the oldest town in this area Sirmium gives a special historical mark to Sremska Mitrovica. The present town was built on the base of Sirmium, one of the capitals in the Roman Empire. Sirmium was one of the largest cities of the world and it had over 100.000 inhabitants. Marko Aurelie, Traian, Probus and others were rulers of Sirmium. It had Royal Place, mint and weapons smithy (factory), hippodrome and many bridges across the Sava. The town was devastated and burned by the Avars in 582. A.D.

The rulers replaced one another, they built, pulled down the town and when the Turkeys conquered it 1458. they stayed there until 1718. After that period Sirmium became the part of Austria - Hungary's Monarchy and in 1918. as a part of Vojvodina became the part of Yugoslavia.

The sights of Sirmium - Žitni trg (Žitni Square) Sremska Mitrovica

The monasteries in Fruška Gora mountain are special historical testimony of XV and XVI century with remarkable architectural, historical and artistic value. The most famous are Hopovo, Krušedol, Šišatovac and others.

During the Austria-Hungary ruling (and especially at the time of military border) the whole area, military buildings, modern trade houses and private houses reminded to Europe's architectures.

There are many festivals, exhibitions and other events in many places and they present our own cultural inheritance.
