The production of husbandry, truck farming and cattle raising is
very productive in the plain of Srem. Vineyard is situated on the
slops of Fruška gora and there are some areas with modern orchards.
On the higher parts of Fruška gora and along the Sava and the Bosut
river there are plenty of woods with well-known oak, ash, beech
and linden tree. The most important roads are crossing this area
such as: highway and railway Belgrade-Zagreb, road Belgrade-Novi
Sad and Novi Sad- Šabac. The international airport Surčin is near
Belgrade. Very important waterways are the Danube and the Sava which
are navigable along the whole area of Srem.
Population
Srem
covers the area of 3486 km2 and of the basis of the estimated data
from 30th June 2000, there are 307 800 inhabitants. There are 27,68%
inhabitants in community of Sremska Mitrovica, 18,81% in Stara Pazova,
17,80% in Ruma, 14,65% in Šid, 11,11% in Pećinci and 3,57% in Irig.
Population
density is 88 inhabitants per km2 in Srem which has 109 settlements. |
